Important income tax due dates in 2012

Filing taxes has always been extremely important, and 2012 is no exception. As always, you can start filing your taxes as of January 1, however there is also a deadline for filing.

In the United States the usual IRS deadline is April 15th, however this year it falls on Sunday, and 16th is a holiday in DC, so the official deadline is Tuesday April 17 2012. By this date you must file your 2011 Federal Tax Return, 2011 State Tax Return, 2011 Federal Tax Extension and 2011 State Tax Extension. If you submit your taxes by this deadline, you will avoid late filing penalties and interest. Also remember that the sooner you file, the sooner you will get your refund back.

In Canada, this years deadline falls on Monday April 30 2012. However, if you are self-employed and you don’t have a balance owing for 2011, your deadline can extend to June 15, 2012. Keep these dates in mind so you can avoid all the potential headache and issues with late filings. Also remember that the closer it is to the deadline, the busier accounting firms will be. Plus if you’re rushing you may make a mistake that might affect your return as well.

The above tax due dates for 2012 are general, we do recommend that you consult with your government tax services and/or your taxation professional so you can verify all proper deadlines and due dates that apply to your personal situation.
